Services

The Safety Pin Cafe is a unique care giving service, created out of necessity and imagination. In the second-half of life, when we were both in our 60's we found we needed to recreate the meanings of 'safety' and 'solutions.' To do this we literally pinned together our lifetimes of very different skill-sets with the reality of health challenges and environmental toxicity. We crossed the borders of the status quo and found solutions that were not common; and opened ourselves to an unfolding life with curiosity and trust.

After a wonderful six years of growing community on Whidbey Island, we are spurred, by many reasons (difficulty with mold, a forest that has given us messages with each successive winter wind storm, reality checks on our physical limitations), to simplify once again, and hitch up our vardo.

At the very least we need to open ourselves to shaking things up. That might mean an incremental, slow and steady, movement with a solution for one or two, but not all, the reasons. Maybe, we can't have it all in one fell swoop? Hawaiians say pela paha ... maybe so, maybe so.

What we seek:

  • We seek communities who support, and are open to implementing, chemicals-free and fragrance-free daily practices, and do not burn wood or pellets for heat
  • We live in a vardo (a Gypsy style sleeping place on wheels) built to the medical and soul-nourishing needs of Mokihana's severe sensitivities to chemicals and fragrance. This 8x12 foot home is our bedroom and safe zone.
  • We seek a place where we can share/rent/caretake space, help with stewarding place, in exchange for electricity, and common (shared) kitchen, bathroom, and laundry; we literally plug-in our vardo and Safety Pin Cafe lifestyle to yours.
  • We seek a community, or individual who could benefit from our experiences with a sensitive form of caregiving.
  • We seek a community who is unafraid of our version of a contemporary Gypsy (meaning no disrespect to the Romani and their culture) lifestyle.
